New 3 Rivers superintendent outlines cell-phone policy change, student achievements and fall activities

Tim Size, superintendent of 3 Rivers Local Schools, introduced himself to the council and described the district’s start to the school year.

Size told the council the district is celebrating Taylor High School’s 100th graduating class and noted a group of students from that centennial class were the first to proceed through the district’s new buildings from kindergarten to graduation. Size highlighted academic and extracurricular accomplishments: 28 students scored a perfect score on at least one Ohio State test during the previous year and two students achieved perfect scores on two separate Ohio State tests. He also reported three students won Cappy Awards for last year’s musical.

On policy, Size said the district is implementing the new statewide cellphone rules from House Bill 96 “bell to bell” (no cell phones during the instructional day, from first bell to last bell). The policy will be adopted formally by the board in September, but the superintendent said enforcement began on the first day of school to set expectations for students.

Size also described athletics and extracurricular activity participation: 352 fall athletes are registered for the upcoming season, and the district has several community events planned including a band invitational and fundraising events. He closed by inviting the council to upcoming events and offering to return with further details if requested.

The council asked about Size’s background; he summarized 25 years in education including leadership roles in North College Hill, Cincinnati Public Schools and time as assistant superintendent for a prior 3 Rivers superintendent.
