PUNTA GORDA, Fla. — The City Council approved resolutions Wednesday setting the annual canal maintenance assessments for two canal districts and the city’s lot‑mowing assessment.
For the Burnt Store Isles Canal Maintenance Assessment District (BSI), the council set the single‑family assessment at $1,010 (operating assessment $920 plus $90 for a lock‑widening project). For the Punta Gorda Isles (PGI) district, the single‑family assessment was set at $1,350; staff said the increase supports seawall replacement and the district’s replacement program. The lot‑mowing assessment remained at $285 per equivalent residential unit.
Nut graf: The assessments fund seawall replacement, dredging and other canal maintenance projects. Staff told council the canal maintenance funds had been drawn down by hurricane damage and that FEMA reimbursement remains pending.
During public input, residents urged sediment testing in impaired canals and pressed for transparency on remaining reserves for hurricane repairs; staff said reserves are reduced by repair spending and that FEMA reimbursements are outstanding. The council approved all three resolutions by voice votes.
Council also directed that future use of assessment funds continue to be tracked and reported to the public as FEMA proceeds and repair programs advance.
