Council schedules public hearing on Fair Rent Commission ordinance after commission revisions

Deputy Corporation Counsel Michael Todd Taylor, who advised the Fair Rent Commission, presented a memorandum summarizing changes the commission adopted after public testimony. The amendments allow alternate members to vote in the absence of regular members, clarify what the commission may report to other city departments (including the police), permit consideration of the frequency of rent increases and landlord improvements, tighten quorum and voting procedures, and set time schedules for hearings and decisions.
Committee members thanked the commission for incorporating public input; Acting Chairwoman Melton called the draft "very well written" and the committee rescinded an earlier motion to move the unamended draft so the revised ordinance could go to a public hearing. The public hearing is set for Oct. 14 at 6:55 p.m., after which the council will consider final action.
Next steps: public hearing on Oct. 14; committee and staff said they will post the amended ordinance and the commission memo ahead of the hearing to allow public review.
