The Huntsville Planning Commission approved on Sept. 23 a two‑phase expansion of the airport parking deck at the Huntsville Madison County Airport Authority. Christine Harding of KPS Group presented the project and the commission granted location, character and extent (LC&E) approval for LC&E item #1003.

The approved design calls for expanding the existing deck to the west of the terminal. Harding said the project will remove 56 surface parking spaces and add 1,415 deck spaces, resulting in a net increase of 1,359 parking spaces. The project includes a new elevator lobby and stairwell adjacent to the terminal and masonry/plaster finishes on the northwest face consistent with phase 1.

Harding said phase 1 will start Oct. 1, 2025, and the overall construction schedule is approximately 24 months, putting full completion around Oct. 1, 2027. She added phase 1 is roughly a seven‑month segment of the work. The commission asked for the construction schedule; Harding provided the dates during the meeting.

Commissioners approved the LC&E application by voice vote. The commission’s approval does not itself contract or fund construction; separate procurement and funding steps will proceed through the airport authority and its contractor. The staff record notes the phased construction will use the north surface parking lot as a laydown area during construction.

Why it matters: The additional parking capacity is intended to accommodate air‑travel demand at the regional airport; the approved schedule and phasing will affect terminal access and surface parking availability during construction. Harding and staff provided projected timing and a net parking‑space calculation to the commission.

The commission closed the item after a short question about completion timing and voted to approve LC&E #1003.
