Highlands Choir opens 2025–26 season with program of ensemble pieces; sells merch and bake-sale to fund trips

Choir director said, "I always tell the students what we do is much more important when there's an audience to listen," as the program opened. Chorale, a mostly freshmen- and sophomore-level ensemble, performed two selections including an Ave Maria setting and a rock-and-roll medley. Bel Canto, an auditioned treble ensemble, sang a boxed arrangement of Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring and an a cappella arrangement of John Lennon's "Imagine." The Junior Highlanders performed four selections including the spiritual "Rock of My Soul" and a Bach piece in German. Chamber Choir closed with arrangements including "7 Bridges Road" and a rendition of Queen's "We Are the Champions." Choir director noted that "every single student — all 90 of them — are crammed like little sardines for Queen's 'We Are the Champions.'"
Instrumental students Cole Noah and Aiden Darnell joined several rock selections, and pianist Joe Stevens accompanied multiple numbers.
Ahead of the concert's close, the director announced a merchandise fundraiser: a limited run of light-blue T-shirts, hoodies and crewnecks available via a QR code in the program and open for purchase "for the next couple weeks." Proceeds were described as returning to the choir program to support upcoming field trips and the high school choir trip; a junior-high field trip was described as a hoped-for activity at the end of the year. A bake sale in the lobby was also offered during the concert with items priced at $1 each; the sale would continue "until the last person leaves," the director said.
The director invited audience members to upcoming performances, saying the school's band and orchestra concerts are scheduled for next week and the holiday concert will be in December.
The program paired traditional choral repertoire and popular arrangements to showcase a range of student groups and supporting instrumentalists, while using on-site fundraising to help finance extracurricular travel and activities.
