Board receives update on capital projects; district expects seven electric buses and chargers this spring

The board received a multi-site capital-project update covering repair work from the August rainstorm, bidding timelines for several Long High School projects, and the district’s transition to electric buses.
Business administrator Mr. Tomasiewicz (district architect liaison) told the board that door repairs at the high school (phase 1) had begun and were expected to finish in about three weeks. He said the district’s new media center, fitness center and art-room sink repairs are out to bid with openings scheduled for Jan. 30. Other insurance-covered repairs — including the science wing and cafeteria punch-list items — were at various stages of design and insurance review.
On the district’s electric-vehicle (EV) buses and chargers, district staff reported the purchase of seven EV buses and said buses are expected to begin arriving in April, with deliveries continuing over several months. A state grant — discussed as a New Jersey grant program during the meeting — covered most of the incremental cost of EV buses versus diesel; the district indicated that the majority of charger purchase and installation costs were covered by the grant. The district said it still must pay architect or permitting costs and any items considered above pre-disaster conditions.
Mr. Tomasiewicz said the district planned to bid lease proceeds for uncovered bus costs on Feb. 7 with the goal of a five-year lease term for any balance not subsidized by the grant.
Board members and the public asked for additional documentation on certain projects, including architectural plans and cost breakdowns for a media-center-to-classroom conversion and details for the EV charger costs not covered by grant funds. The district said it would provide those details by email or in subsequent materials.
