Superintendent Dr. Brian P. Davies announced to the Leonia Public School District Board of Education that he will resign for the purpose of retirement effective Aug. 1, 2025.
In prepared remarks read during the meeting, Dr. Davies said the decision followed medical advice related to a cardiovascular event last year and family discussions. He told the board, “I have made the difficult decision to resign for the purpose of retirement as Leonia superintendent of schools at the end of the 24–25 school year,” and added that he will “work with [the] Board of Education to ensure a smooth transition for my successor.”
Dr. Davies said he remains committed to his responsibilities for the remainder of the school year and thanked district staff, educators and the board for their support. He noted the community and schools were “a gem” and said he will share the announcement with families the following morning.
Board members responded with public expressions of gratitude for Dr. Davies’s leadership and transparency; several members praised his communication during the COVID period and his accessibility to the board and community. Dr. Davies asked the board to defer extended remarks until later in the school year so the district could continue work on the current agenda. He said he would support the district through the remainder of the year and the transition process.
No formal board action to accept the resignation was recorded during the meeting; the announcement was presented as the superintendent’s statement and transition plan.
