The Wayne County Board of Education voted unanimously Oct. 6 to rescind former policy 36-31 and implement a rewrite, labeled policy 36-32, immediately after the policy committee recommended the change.
The action followed a report from the policy committee that the district-drafted policy required a “total rewrite,” and the committee recommended items D through I for first read and asked the board to suspend an existing procedural rule so the rewrite could take effect at once. The board voted to rescind the old policy, suspend policy 20-14 to allow first-read adoption, and approve the new policy on a unanimous voice/hand-raise vote.
Policy committee chair Mr. Henderson (Board member, District 2) told the board the rewrite came from district staff and legal review is ongoing for a separate tabled policy. Board members raised no public questions during the meeting; committee action carried the items to the full board for a single vote.
Votes were called from the dais without separate seconds because the measures originated in committee; the board’s roll was recorded by a unanimous hand-raise for each of the three procedural steps.
The board did not discuss the substantive language of the new policy on the record during the public meeting; the committee report said legal review is ongoing for another, related policy that was tabled and will return to the board at a future meeting.
The board chair closed the policy item after the unanimous votes.
