The Vigo County Commissioners voted to adopt Ordinance 2025-7, a fire‑prevention measure that requires large businesses with known radio‑communication problems to install in‑building radio amplifying systems during new construction or major renovations.
Matt McCullough, identified in the meeting as chief for the Alley Fire Department and speaking on behalf of Vigo County fire departments, told commissioners the rule mirrors a city ordinance and would benefit police, fire and EMS by improving internal radio coverage. "It's in the top 5, causes of line of duty deaths, by NIOSH for firefighters because of radio communications going down or being limited," McCullough said.
McCullough said the county ordinance would follow the model of a city ordinance passed last year and require installation of amplifiers at the time of initial building construction or during any major renovation that could reduce radio communications. A staff member noted the proposal "does mirror the city's" approach, and commissioners voiced support for being consistent with the city rule.
After the presentation, a commissioner moved to approve the ordinance; a second was recorded and commissioners voted in favor.
The ordinance adoption occurred during the meeting's regular agenda and was approved without recorded amendments. Commissioners and fire officials said the requirement aims to reduce instances in which responders cannot communicate inside large or complex buildings.
The county did not provide an implementation timeline or an enforcement mechanism in the meeting record; those details were not specified during the discussion.
