The sheriff provided the Vigo County Council a summary review of the department’s commissary account, listing recent expenditures and offering to answer council members’ questions.
The sheriff said the commissary account has been used to pay for vehicle upfitting (about $141,000 through August), vehicle repairs (about $10,000), training ($750) and equipment/uniforms (about $56,000). He said the commissary is used for allowable purchases without asking the council for additional funds and that the department met with the Indiana State Board of Accounts for a review after the sheriff took office.
Council members noted heightened state-level scrutiny of commissary and similar accounts in other counties and asked whether more detailed backup (for example, itemized Mastercard charges and descriptions for vehicle upfitting) could be provided to the council. The sheriff said he would provide whatever is required by law and offered to meet with council members to review the full ledger; council members said they would accept that offer and that more detail would be helpful for oversight.
No appropriation or corrective action was recorded; the item was treated as an informational review and the sheriff agreed to provide expanded documentation to council members on request.
