Representatives of the Lost Creek Fire Protection District told the Vigo County Council they plan to submit two appeals to the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance (DLGF) and requested the council’s signature to certify the applications.
The district said the first appeal requests an extension of services in the amount of approximately $100,000 to fund continued and expanded services after incorporation of Nevins Township into the district. The second appeal requests an assessed-value growth adjustment of roughly $20,000, based on a state formula that averages assessed-value changes over three years.
District representatives said the appeals were not submitted at budget time and must be filed by Oct. 20. They said the additional funding, if approved, will be assessed to property owners in the district; district representatives indicated Nevins Township residents already pay for fire protection through the township and that the change would shift funding into the Lost Creek levy and spread it among all residents served.
Council members asked procedural questions about whether the DLGF had denied any prior requests (district representatives said no denial had occurred yet and that the district had discussed the matter with DLGF staff). The council suggested it will place authorization to sign and certify the appeals on a forthcoming agenda so the district can meet the filing deadline.
No formal vote on certification was recorded at the meeting; district representatives were told the council would consider the certification next week.
