Commissioners move $100,000 from unrestricted funds to opioid grants program

County administrator Debbie Bennett Steersman asked commissioners to approve a $100,000 transfer from unrestricted funds to support the county opioid grants program. She reported the restricted opioid fund balance was $72,233 and there were five pending applications totaling approximately $118,010.53: Warrick County Recovers ($25,000), St. John the Baptist School ($25,000), Safe Haven ($25,000), Ankletown Fire ($24,274) and Elder Veil Fire ($15,610.53).
Steersman described one of the applicants’ programs as coach and staff training and scholarships for underprivileged youth in a softball program. Commissioners asked clarifying questions about specific applicants and acronyms; Steersman supplied details about program uses and the number of pending applications.
A motion to transfer $100,000 from the unrestricted fund to the opioid grants program was made, seconded and approved unanimously. Commissioners said the transfer would allow pending awards to be made while preserving restricted funds. Steersman noted there remain additional applications to review and that she may return to the board if more funds are needed later in the year.
The item carried by unanimous vote cleared the way for administrators to begin awarding grants from the combined restricted and newly transferred funds.
