Newfields committee narrows options for school front‑yard safety; DOT, town approvals still required

A Newfields School District facilities committee on a recent, recorded meeting reviewed four concept designs for reconfiguring the school driveway, crosswalk and visitor/teacher parking and agreed to gather contractor cost estimates and consult multiple town bodies before scheduling the plan for a ballot article.

The proposals aim to reduce student exposure to vehicle traffic at arrival and dismissal, move or improve the school‑front crosswalk, and in some concepts add or shift paved surfaces. Committee members said next steps include refining scopes, getting order‑of‑magnitude pricing from contractors, and checking permitting and budget implications with the select board, zoning authorities, the conservation committee and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation traffic bureau.

Committee members described the process as iterative: staff will break each concept into discrete work scopes (sidewalks, crosswalks, partial paving, drainage and buried‑tank remediation) and seek multiple contractor price points so the school board can pick a final concept and, if desired, place a warrant article on a future ballot.
