School Board doubles substitute nurse pay to $25 an hour to address shortage

The Londonderry School Board on Oct. 7 voted unanimously to raise substitute nurse pay to $25 an hour in an effort to fill open substitute nursing positions.
The motion to increase the rate — which board members said doubles the district’s prior rate of $12.86 an hour — passed 5–0. Motion language was moved by Sarah Laughlin and seconded by Tim Porter.
Staff told the board the district has struggled to recruit substitute nurses since the school year began and that a review of neighboring districts showed Londonderry’s pay was near the bottom of the market. "We were at the very bottom of what every other district surrounding us pays for sub nurses," Amity (staff member) said. Staff reported the most common pay in nearby districts is approximately $200 per day and described $25 an hour as a reasonable starting point (about $169 per day).
Board members supported trying the higher rate and agreed to revisit the matter if the district still had trouble filling shifts. "Keep that. Sound like a plan?" the chair asked; staff agreed to monitor and report back.
The board recorded the vote as Aye, 5–0.
