Commission approves legal services agreement with Daniel Heath Lamson as public defender

The Coffeyville City Commission on Jan. 28 approved Resolution R-25-14 authorizing a legal services agreement with attorney Daniel Heath Lamson to serve as the city’s public defender.
City Attorney Paul Scribe told commissioners the previous public defender, Mr. Gossard, retired and that Lamson was recommended because there was no suitable local candidate; Lamson lives in Sudan and will travel to Coffeyville for arraignments and trial dockets. Scribe said the city plans to structure the agreement so Lamson attends court in Coffeyville once a month except when trial dockets require additional appearances.
Vice Mayor Van Oster moved and Mayor Maples seconded the resolution. Commissioners voted aye: Vice Mayor Van Oster, Commissioner Faulkner, Mayor Maples, Commissioner Edwards, Commissioner Hendricks.
The contract replaces the prior public-defender arrangement; staff said Lamson will begin coverage according to the schedule included in the legal services agreement.
