Commission authorizes purchase of trailer-mounted core drill for pavement analysis

The Coffeyville City Commission voted Jan. 28 to authorize purchase of a trailer-mounted core drill from Core It Diamond Tools for the public works/public service department.
Deputy Director of Public Works Thomas Osborne told the commission the equipment is needed to take pavement cores and accurately assess asphalt thickness and base conditions. That information, he said, helps staff determine whether mill-and-overlay or full reconstruction is required on street projects. Osborne said similar work by Montgomery County crews informed the city’s approach and that staff solicited quotes rather than formal competitive bids because the equipment is specialized and not always apples-to-apples among vendors.
Commissioners asked about the vendor’s longevity and parts availability; staff said Core It has manufactured rigs for local governments for decades and that replacement bits are standard, pipe-thread parts.
Vice Mayor Van Oster moved and Commissioner Faulkner seconded approval of Resolution R-25-13. The motion passed by voice vote recorded as: Commissioner Hendricks, aye; Vice Mayor Van Oster, aye; Commissioner Faulkner, aye; Mayor Maples, aye; Commissioner Edwards, aye.
Staff said the unit will be used to support the city’s 2025 pavement projects and to reduce the risk of performing the wrong type of street repair.
