Committee schedules Safe Routes follow-up, plans communications subcommittee and community trainings

The committee reviewed several administrative and outreach items including American Red Cross community training, the city civics academy, and the formation of a communications subcommittee.

Red Cross training: Heath reported 16 confirmed attendees and committee materials showed $1,809 remaining in the committee’s training budget. Committee members agreed to cap enrollment at 24 to avoid adding instructors and to keep within budgeted amounts.

Civics academy and chair election: The civics academy is a six-week program starting in mid-January that covers city operations, budget, land use, public works, emergency management and public safety. Each committee was asked to prepare one or two presentation slides describing committee functions; the committee tabled who will present until vacancies are filled and the January meeting when a new chair may be elected.

Communications subcommittee: the committee agreed to form a communications subcommittee to generate topics and draft social-media and newsletter materials; one volunteer offered to help produce content. Staff (Elena) will screen submissions for compliance with city communications policy. Members requested an inventory of what currently appears on the city’s site as a baseline for future posts.

Subcommittees and events: The events subcommittee (National Night Out) has no immediate updates and will begin outreach planning soon. The transportation safety subcommittee continues to collect neighborhood signatures for speed-hump requests and waits on an engineering report for Oakview; staff will follow up.

Closing and community notes: members offered condolences for Brandy, an original committee member who recently died, and shared community-focused closing remarks. The meeting adjourned after those comments.
