The Homewood City Finance Committee approved creating a police substation inside City Hall and reserving two to three parking spaces on the plaza for police vehicles.
Mayor Alex introduced the proposal, saying a downtown substation was discussed previously when the police department moved to West Homewood and that the city has a suitable space in City Hall. Mayor Alex said the build-out would permit two or three officers to check in and out of City Hall and create a visible police presence downtown.
Mayor Alex and other speakers estimated the fit-out would cost between $30,000 and $50,000 for cubicles and related work; City staff member Kale Smith said funding for the furniture likely already exists in the current furniture budget, so no transfer of funds would be required. Committee members asked for a specific parking count; the mayor and staff proposed designating at least two but not to exceed three plaza spaces for police vehicles.
Councilor Allemont moved to approve the substation and parking designation; Councilor Walton seconded. The motion passed 5 to 0.
The committee instructed staff to confirm the final number of dedicated parking spaces with the police chief and to use existing furniture funds for the fit-out. Any ordinance to formally restrict plaza parking will be processed separately if required.
