Newington School District honors outstanding Students of the Month

Newington School District Superintendent Maureen Robinson recognized outstanding students from across the district at an April student-of-the-month ceremony, highlighting academic progress, leadership and citizenship for recipients from elementary through high school.

Robinson said the award is rare and selective, noting that “less than 2% of our students ever get this award.” The ceremony included principals presenting nominations and teachers’ comments about each recipient; the district recorded the event for later viewing because it no longer live-streams due to internet limitations.

The ceremony produced brief profiles of each honoree presented by their school principals. Jason Smith, principal of Anna Reynolds School, presented Amy Lee (fourth grade) and said teachers highlighted her kindness, inclusiveness and responsibility in class. Kevin Duran, principal at Elizabeth Green, presented Sebastian Rosa (fourth grade), saying staff praised his academic growth, perseverance and encouragement of classmates. Zarlene Torres Ruiz introduced George O'Cory (fourth grade), whom teachers described as a high-character student who helps peers and shows leadership in and out of class.

Jim Marciano, principal of Ruth Chaffee School, presented Shrey (fourth grade) and noted staff described him as a positive, curious student who contributes in student government and the arts. Martin Kellogg Middle School principal Mark McKellough presented Ally Gallinato (eighth grade), whose teachers credited her with empathy, peer mentoring, academic rigor and leadership in athletics. John Wallace Middle School principal Dan Dias presented Nathan (seventh grade), commending his demonstration of the school’s pillars — preparation, respect, integrity, determination and excellence — and noting his balance of academics, band and competitive swimming. Newington High School staff presented senior Jordan Williamson, who was praised for honors-level work, extracurricular leadership and plans to study aviation at Delaware State University.

Principals generally read nominations and past-teachers’ notes that emphasized each student’s combination of schoolwork, kindness to peers and extracurricular involvement. Presenters also shared short personal details supplied by students, such as family background, pets, hobbies and future interests (for example, Jordan Williamson’s interest in a career in aviation and possible service in the Air National Guard).

Robinson told families the district will provide a link to the recorded ceremony “tomorrow or this week” so relatives who could not attend can view the presentations. The ceremony concluded with students and families taking photos and refreshments offered in a back room.

The awards spanned the district’s elementary, middle and high schools and were described by staff as a celebration of both academic achievement and the character expectations the district promotes.
