The Alabama State Board of Education elected Dr. Yvette Richardson as vice president and Dr. Wayne Reynolds as president pro tem for the 2021–22 term and unanimously approved the meeting agenda and the June 10 minutes during its July 13 meeting in the Gordon Persons Building Auditorium in Montgomery.
The votes fulfilled the board's annual constitutional duty to select officers for the upcoming term. "This is the only meeting that is scheduled in the state constitution, and it always occurs on the July in order to elect, vice president and a pro tem to serve at your side," said Dr. Mackey, state superintendent, in a report to the board.
Dr. Wayne Reynolds nominated Yvette Richardson for vice president; a motion to confirm Richardson's nomination was made and seconded and passed by unanimous raised-hand vote. Dr. Richardson was then elected vice president. Dr. Richardson nominated Dr. Wayne Reynolds for president pro tem; that nomination was likewise confirmed by unanimous raised-hand vote.
Board members also moved to approve the meeting agenda and to approve the minutes from the June 10, 2021, board meeting. Both motions carried by unanimous raised-hand vote.
There were no public speakers signed up for the meeting, the board clerk noted. The board adjourned after completing the items, and members proceeded to the scheduled work sessions.
The board set its next elementary to secondary education meeting for Thursday, Aug. 12, 2021, at 10 a.m. in the Gordon Persons Building Auditorium, with a work session to follow in Room P103.
