Three students described their high school volleyball season, saying the team has improved since last year and is currently "ranked second in our region," and asked for more community support for the sport.
A student who identified themself as Student 1 said, "I love the fast paceness of volleyball. I just love how quick it is and how team oriented it is. And so it's just like a well oiled machine. We all work together." Student 2 added that the team has "grown a lot since last year," and noted players bring different skills and face tougher competition this season.
Students emphasized both physical and mental demands. A speaker said practice focuses on footwork and endurance: players "have to have light feet" and train to move quickly left, right, forward and backward. They also stressed staying mentally focused during matches: "It's really important to, like, focus, like, on the next point," Student 2 said.
On season goals, a student said one objective is to see teammates earn all-region recognition and noted several players are interested in playing in college: "One of my goals this year is to see some of our girls in the newspaper for all region, as well as I have a couple girls interested in playing at the collegiate level," Student 2 said.
Speakers asked the community to increase support for high school volleyball across schools, saying local fans and recognition would help the sport grow: "I would like to see the Yuma community show more support for volleyball in general," one student said. They emphasized that volleyball can be accessible and enjoyable for many students, even those new to the sport.
