Historic review panel approves glass rear storefront door at 400 West Main

The Denison Historic Preservation Commission granted a certificate of appropriateness for the addition of a rear glass storefront door at 400 West Main Street (Case 2025-037H) after hearing from the building owner about accessibility and security plans.

The request, presented to the commission, proposes replacing an existing metal rear door with a glass door set in a metal frame in a 64-by-86 opening, according to the applicant. The commission’s historic preservation officer recommended approval.

Property owner Peter Eng told the commission that the current metal door is structurally strong but is “not aesthetically pleasing,” and that a glass door would improve access for customers and for people using wheelchairs. Eng also said the metal door would remain on site: it would be kept open during business hours and closed at night for security. Eng said the door installation would be professionally performed. His wife, Maggie Eng, attended the hearing and appeared with him.

Commission members asked about security and installation details. After discussion, a board member moved to approve the certificate of appropriateness; another member seconded. The chair called for a voice vote. The board voted in favor and the certificate was granted; the meeting record shows a voice vote approving the item but does not list an exact roll-call tally.

The proposed change is located on the building’s alley elevation across from Heritage Park and, per the applicant, will also ease moving heavy equipment during nearby Main Street construction. No conditions or amendments to the application were recorded in the meeting minutes.
