Main Street promotions leaders and public commenters told the board the Aug. 1 First Friday event — themed "Pickles Everywhere" — drew strong attendance and visible business participation, and the promotions committee outlined several fall events for downtown.
"Attendance visually looked great," Kate, Promotions Committee lead, said. She estimated staff gave away about 500 pickles despite ordering only 200. "We thought we had only ordered 200. We gave away probably 500 in, like, an hour," she said.
Why it matters: The promotions committee credited higher downtown activity and strong business participation with helping foot traffic; the committee also laid out a series of events intended to sustain that momentum through the fall.
Upcoming events the committee highlighted include: - Third Thursday (Aug. 14) on North Main Street with live music and food trucks; - Kids' Day at the Adrian Farmer's Market (Aug. 16); - A scavenger hunt for service businesses (Aug. 20); - Welcome Back Bash for students (Aug. 26), expected to welcome an estimated 600–800 students downtown; and - First Friday on Sept. 5 with a Maple Pride theme that will include a "touch a truck" display with city departments.
Committee members said pickleball courts and other activities were heavily used and local volunteers helped run the courts. Kate said Main Street purchased paddles and balls and did not lose equipment during the event.
Public comment amplified the event updates. Don Taylor, a downtown organizer, said Artilicious (referred to in the meeting as "Delicious/Artilicious") will feature mobile glass blowing, Raku firings, and on-site classes; he described demonstrations planned for noon–2 p.m. on Sunday during the festival. "We're gonna have, on-site mobile glass blowing... they wanna start at 11 on Sunday... it takes an hour for everything to warm up," Taylor said.
Sheila Blair, representing the Adrian Armory and Launch Lenawee, briefed the board on training and fundraising: QuickBooks and AI business classes are scheduled, a three-part AI series will begin in September, and the Armory's annual fundraiser is set for Sept. 19 (the night before Artilicious) featuring 13 food vendors, an open bar and live music.
Jay said staff has asked Cobalt360 for updated event-attendance numbers and expected to share the data when available.
No formal board action was taken; the committee asked members to promote upcoming events and volunteer support.
