At the Sept. 30, 2025 meeting of the El Segundo Unified School District Board of Education, the board publicly recognized Center Street muralist and elementary art specialist Amy Tai for painting a large cougar mural and introduced Dr. Olivia Young as the district’s new assistant superintendent of educational services.
Board members praised Tai’s volunteer work, saying she spent multiple weeks over the summer climbing ladders and painting the mural, and that families brought water and encouragement while she worked. The district said Tai’s contribution is a “lasting legacy” for Center Street and Richmond Street schools. Tai thanked the community volunteers, including colleagues who assisted, and said the project helped her connect with families.
Later in the meeting Superintendent-level staff introduced Dr. Olivia Young. The board said Dr. Young joins El Segundo Unified after a 20-year career in education, including roles as a teacher, assistant principal, principal and director of human resources; most recently she was assistant superintendent of educational services for Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified. In brief remarks Dr. Young said she had visited schools and principals in her first weeks on the job and was “honored to join in the efforts to create pathways to excellence, a community of well-being and the legacy of innovation and sustainability.”
The recognitions and the introduction were ceremonial and informational; no board vote or personnel action was recorded at the meeting on either item.
