Bedford County schools see enrollment dip, project tighter budget as maintenance reserve shrinks

A staff member presented the Bedford County Public Schools first-quarter financial review, telling the Budget & Finance Committee that lower enrollment is driving a projected $661,000 reduction in state funding for the year and leaving the district with a tighter operating outlook.

The staff member said the district counted about 60 to 70 fewer students in the first 10 days of the school year and will submit an official report to the state that could revise those figures. To help offset the loss, the district is projecting $100,000 more in sales-tax revenue for the year based on strong first-quarter receipts.

Committee members were also shown preliminary revenue and expenditure variances for the district’s $125 million operating budget. The presenter reported the district was about $342,000 under budget on revenue and about $424,000 under budget on expenditures through the first quarter, and described the overall position as “tight” but not yet a crisis.
