Board proclaims Constitution Week, PACE Month, Hunger Action Month and Suicide Prevention Awareness Month; honors Scotia Band

The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors issued a series of proclamations Tuesday recognizing Constitution Week (Sept. 17–23, 2025), National PACE Month, Hunger Action Month and Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and adopted a resolution honoring the Scotia Band’s 90 years of community service.

Supervisor Wilson read a proclamation declaring Sept. 17–23, 2025 as Constitution Week; a member of the Redwood Forest chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution accepted the proclamation on behalf of the chapter.

Supervisor Bone presented a resolution recognizing the Scotia Band, noting the volunteer organization’s 1935 founding in the Pacific Lumber Company town of Scotia, the band’s 501(c)(3) status and its scholarship program. Ken Ayub, music director and conductor of the Scotia Band, accepted the resolution and described the group’s intergenerational membership and stewardship of the Swiss Hall performance space.

Supervisor Madrone presented a proclamation recognizing September as National PACE Month and honoring Redwood Coast PACE, a program of the Humboldt Senior Resource Center. A representative of Redwood Coast PACE told the board the program has served more than 650 older adults and operates day centers in Fortuna, Eureka and Arcata; the representative described the PACE model as a fully integrated program enabling participants who qualify for nursing-home level care to remain in the community with supports.

Supervisor Arroyo presented a proclamation designating September as Hunger Action Month. Carly Robbins, executive director of Food for People, the county’s food bank, told the board that Food for People distributed about 2,600,000 pounds of food last year and reaches more than 21,000 people each month across Humboldt County, with roughly 6,000 children facing food insecurity locally. The proclamation cited national and local food-insecurity statistics and encouraged public awareness and action.

The board also proclaimed Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. A representative of the Humboldt County Suicide Prevention Network accepted the proclamation and urged communitywide prevention efforts, pointing to surveys cited in the proclamation showing elevated rates of suicidal ideation among local students and urging use of the 988 Lifeline and resources for LGBTQ and Indigenous youth.

These were ceremonial recognitions and no formal votes on spending or policy accompanied the proclamations.
