Planning board receives updates on playgrounds, parks and riverfront projects

The Malden Planning Board on Oct. 8 received brief status reports on community preservation and park projects across the city.
Commissioner Ronnie (last name not specified) reported that construction at the ELC Playground is complete and that a permanent sign indicating public hours has been installed. At Sheryl Park construction is complete but an additional fence segment will be installed after childcare providers requested more perimeter fencing; a permanent sign was not yet in place. Linden rink construction is complete but its permanent sign remains pending.
Work at Malden River Works is ongoing and currently includes demolition, excavation, soil remediation and installation of underground drainage. Commissioners also heard that the Spotpawn Brook Greenway design team has rerouted a section of the planned path to reduce potential conflicts between bicyclists, pedestrians, cars and construction vehicles on Canal and Charles streets.
Commissioner Ronnie said the community preservation application process is underway and listed several applicants (Saint Paul’s Church rental assistance program, Emmanuel Baptist Church, Malden Affordable Housing Trust, Linden Park and a digitization project for City Council records). He said the board will provide more detailed application information at upcoming meetings as proposals solidify.
Planning staff said the master plan (comprehensive plan) request for proposals is still in development and that the Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development is preparing the consultant RFP. Staff also said they would follow up with another update on the open-space and recreation plan status.
