Votes at a glance: Gulfport council ratifies appointment, approves contracts and budget truing, authorizes opioid settlements

Gulfport City Council members took a series of procedural and substantive votes at their Thursday meeting, approving appointments, one-year professional contracts, budget adjustments and legal settlement authorizations, while tabling a major tax-abatement ordinance for further study.

Key outcomes

- Appointment: The council ratified the mayoral appointment of Greg Holmes to the Gulf Regional Planning Commission. The motion to approve was seconded and carried unanimously.

- Emergency status: The council reconfirmed and extended the city’s state of emergency status related to Hurricane Zeta while open worksheets remain pending; the council approved the resolution unanimously.

- Executive session and legal settlements: After an executive session, the council authorized the city attorney to accept a small insurance payment ($104.77) related to damage to a traffic sign. The council also authorized its attorneys to accept the proposed settlements in the city’s ongoing opioid litigation with Purdue and certain affiliates and the Sackler family, and to accept proposed settlements with a group of secondary manufacturers (listed on the record). The council recorded these authorizations as motions made and seconded and approved with no recorded opposition.

- Several items were added to the agenda at the start of the meeting (6A, 7A and 13A); council approved adding them and proceeded to vote on those items where applicable.
