At the petitions-and-requests portion of the Greenbelt City Council meeting, resident Tom Lamond requested that the city add more bicycle parking in the Roosevelt Center, particularly near the co-op, granite building and merchants where parking is limited or muddy.
Lamond described current racks as sparse and often out of sight and suggested creating a small hard-surfaced platform near the co-op to add several two-bike stations, or placing racks near the granite building slope or the grassy area outside Gap. He said he avoids leaving his bicycle at the Aquatic and Fitness Center because he prefers to keep it in sight while he shops. “If we want people to use bicycles in Greenbelt, it’ll be helpful to have the bike racks where they can be used by people who are shopping or visiting merchants,” Lamond said.
Councilmembers acknowledged the suggestion and noted at least one additional existing rack near the Greenbelt Theater; Mayor Jordan asked staff to look into locations and options for more visible racks. Lamond said he would be willing to share more detailed placement ideas with staff.
