Drainage board considers requiring well-drilling paperwork be shared with county health department

Board members discussed a proposal to require that paperwork submitted when a well is drilled (the reports that go to the state Department of Natural Resources) also be copied to the Vermillion County Health Department for local mapping.
Supporters said a county-level well map would help preserve knowledge of well locations, inform septic-system permitting decisions, and protect drinking-water resources as land changes hands across generations. One board member cited examples from other communities where the health department lacked a local well record and private wells ended up located too close to septic systems.
No ordinance was adopted; members said the idea needs review by the health department and possibly by zoning staff to determine whether the requirement belongs in drainage-board rules, the zoning code, or another local ordinance. Board staff committed to discuss the proposal with the health department and report back.
