District reports $1.3 million estimate to repair failing brickwork at CMS; playground work complete

The School District of the Chathams reported structural repairs are needed on older portions of the CMS building, and the business administrator said an estimated $1.3 million would be required to repair remaining failing brickwork.
Mister Dequila, the business administrator, told the board that two sections of upper-level bricks had fallen from the original building and that contractors repaired those sections. An investigation found brick ties were not installed between the cinder-block wall and the brick veneer when the building was constructed, Dequila said, and that settling over "about 60 plus years" caused separation.
"To correct the entire remaining section of the building will be about a cost of $1,300,000," Dequila said. He added the district will consider the work during upcoming budget discussions with the finance committee and under capital spending.
On a separate facilities item, Dequila reported that work on the CMS prep playground has been completed and that construction fencing should be removed "once the ground dries up a little bit," with only minor earthwork remaining.
Ending: The district said it will consider the brick repairs in the capital budget process and did not authorize immediate spending at the meeting.
