Board approves two delayed openings for high-school NJSLA field testing; testing schedule clarified

The School District of the Chathams Board of Education voted unanimously to approve two 90-minute delayed openings on Nov. 12 and Nov. 13 to accommodate field testing for the New Jersey Student Learning Assessment, administrators said.
Dr. Sortino said the delayed openings are necessary "to accommodate the Department of Education's required field testing for the new NJSLA." The high school will administer field tests over three days, Nov. 12–14; Dr. Donahue and curriculum committee members said testing at the high school will span those dates and that the district will send parents a letter in advance.
The curriculum committee clarified which grades take which subjects: seniors will take math ("they have to take the math that they did last year"), while grades 9–11 take reading/language arts; some math testing includes grade 12, curriculum committee members said. The board discussed whether Cougar Academy (an alternate program referenced during the meeting) would follow the delayed opening; administrators said the decision remained under review and that they were "leaning" toward applying the delayed opening in the fall but would revisit for spring administrations.
The board voted 7–0 to approve the calendar change. Miss Ross, Miss Allen, Miss Peck, Mr. Ryan, Miss Weber, Dr. Zhang and Miss Ciccarelli voted in favor in roll-call comments recorded during the meeting. Dr. Donahue will present NJSLA results at the Nov. 3 meeting, the curriculum committee said.
Ending: The district will notify families with details and a separate parent letter will be issued in advance of testing; some scheduling details for alternative programs remain under review.
