Nevada County rolls out Zonehaven and Ready Nevada County campaign to simplify evacuations

Nevada County emergency officials used the Truckee meeting to promote Ready Nevada County's public education campaign and the Zonehaven neighborhood evacuation-mapping tool.
Officials described Ready, Set, Go as a three-tiered public preparedness model: (1) "Ready" for planning, hardening homes and creating defensible space; (2) "Set" for heightened readiness when fire-weather warnings are present; and (3) "Go" for following evacuation advisories and orders. Presenters emphasized simple steps residents can take: harden vents with fine-mesh screens, use noncombustible deck materials, clear ladder fuels and maintain the first 100 feet of defensible space around a home.
The county urged residents to visit community.zonehaven.com, enter their address and record the assigned Zonehaven evacuation zone for their neighborhood. Officials said Zonehaven does not replace opt-in CodeRED or Nixle alerts but supplements them by letting residents know which geographic zone authorities are referencing when an evacuation advisory or order is issued. Presenters noted the county will use multiple notification channels (radio, word-of-mouth, street patrols) for residents without internet access.
Speakers also highlighted tools for medically vulnerable residents: registering needs with utility and emergency programs, planning for CPAP machines or oxygen concentrators (battery or generator backups) and contacting 2-1-1 for local resource information. County staff and community members told personal evacuation stories to underline the importance of neighborhood ties and pre-identified "Find Your Five" contacts to help during evacuations.
The board received the informational presentation; staff repeated the message that Zonehaven will help residents interpret targeted evacuation messaging and urged sign-up for CodeRED and local preparedness resources.
