Commissioners flag visibility, lighting and restroom issues at local parks

Members of the Estacada Parks and Recreation Commission described maintenance and safety concerns at city parks, including overgrown vegetation that reduces sightlines, missing or nonfunctional bathroom door locks, recurring vandalism at rest-stop restrooms, and the absence or failure of lighting that had been part of earlier park design stipulations.

Commissioners said the park walkway was intended to have vegetation trimmed to a three-foot height to preserve sightlines both day and night. They noted some plantings had died and would need replacement, and that cigarette litter and other debris were more visible where dry vegetation remains.

On park facilities, commissioners reported that automatic locks once installed on bathroom doors are no longer present and that one rest stop had been closed recently “due to vandalism.” Commissioners suggested public-works follow-up to determine when locks and lighting can be repaired or restored; one commissioner said Nighthawk had installed locks previously and recommended consulting Don in public works for next steps.

As an interim mitigation, a commissioner suggested placing porta-potties if restrooms remain unusable, while others emphasized the need to avoid encouraging vandalism and to ensure restrooms are cleaned and maintained. Commissioners said volunteers or staff have been manually clearing clogs and cleaning facilities when vandalism occurs.

The commission did not take formal action during the meeting but identified public-works contact and further inspection as next steps.
