Commission approves design addendum to capture wastewater surcharges at Davis lift station, add generator replacement work

Fort Scott commissioners approved an amendment Dec. 17 to the city’s wastewater evaluation and design contract to add final design work for a pump/force main that will prevent surcharging and overflows at the Davis lift station and to incorporate replacement of the station’s aging generator.
Why it matters: The Davis lift station surcharges during heavy storms and has previously overflowed to a creek; Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) does not permit uncontrolled overflows. The project will add a packaged pump system and a new wet well and will relocate generator and transformer infrastructure to reduce flood risk.
City engineering staff said the new pump will be large — pumping into a 12-inch force main — and that the best layout requires a separate wet well adjacent to the existing station. The contract’s original engineering scope and cumulative addenda now total about $317,000, up from the original $207,000 the city approved earlier in the multi-year project.
Commissioners approved the addendum by roll call. Staff told the commission they are coordinating closely with Evergy on transformer placement and utility ties and will finalize pump selection and wet-well details before bidding the construction work.
What’s next: With the design addendum approved, staff will finalize plans and specifications, identify electrical and transformer arrangements with Evergy, then prepare the project for public bidding.
