A staff member at Marcella Ball Elementary School in Sioux Falls said students will take part in a PTO-run fun run today to raise donations to support the school's newly forming Parent Teacher Organization. The staff member said the event is being organized with help from the school's physical education teacher, identified in the announcement as Mr. Z.
The announcement said students spent the past two weeks collecting donations door-to-door to support the PTO, and that families, parents and guardians were invited to attend. Students will come out during their specials period so parents and grandparents can watch, the speaker said.
The fundraiser includes incentives: the top 10 student fundraisers will get to "pie a staff member in the face," and classroom winners have received prizes from the PTO, according to the announcement. School staff also prepared short instructional videos described in the announcement as "Laboe lowdown videos" to show students safe door-to-door practices.
The speaker said the PTO has held initial meetings; about 20 people attended the first meeting and roughly a dozen have attended subsequent gatherings. The announcement described the fun run as the school's first major inclusive community event in the northwest corner of the campus and said organizers hoped it would help build community and get more families involved.
No formal votes or district decisions were announced during the remarks. The announcement focused on event logistics, recent fundraising activity and planned incentives for student participation.
