The Southampton County School Board on Oct. 13 approved several requests from outside groups to use school facilities this winter and next spring, including a youth volleyball program, a local dance school recital, a regional pageant scholarship event and a community pageant.
Representatives Eric Benson and Charles Cooper requested use of Riverdale Gymnasium for Camp 25 volleyball practices from Jan. 6–March 19 and asked for a fee waiver as a nonprofit. Board discussion noted the full fee printed in the packet was $25,665; with the nonprofit discount and fee waiver the group would pay the reduced amount listed in the packet. A motion to approve the Camp 25 request carried by voice vote.
The board also approved a request from Carol Fox of Contemporary School of Dance to use Southampton High School for a Friday/Saturday recital in May; the total fees listed were $1,160 with a discounted rate of $116 if a waiver was granted. Another request, from a pageant organizer identified in the packet as Miss Dawkins for the Hampton Roads and Miss Southampton scholarship packet event, requested use of the high school auditorium and classrooms on Dec. 13; the total fee shown was $1,450 with a discounted $145 if waived. Finally, a request from Kashif Carter of Speak Life to use the high-school auditorium and commons for a beauty pageant on Jan. 17 was approved; insurance was noted as pending once the request was approved.
Each of these use-of-facilities motions included either a staff presentation or an applicant explanation, followed by motions from board members and unanimous voice approvals.
Ending: All facility requests in the packet were approved with fee waivers or the nonprofit discount applied where requested; no roll-call tallies were recorded in the public transcript.
