Local ATV/UTV and snowmobile groups report high use, organized rides and speed concerns

A representative of the Sawyer County Snowmobile and ATV Alliance reported heavy UTV use this summer, successful organized rides including a Labor Day surge, planned rides in September, and that law enforcement presence helped address speeding concerns along roadsides.
Jane Schrader, representing the Sawyer County Snowmobile and ATV Alliance, told the committee that UTV off-road riding has been especially popular this summer, with particularly heavy activity over Labor Day.
She said organized rides drew good turnouts and that another ride was planned for Sept. 20 hosted by the North Country Riders ATV Club starting and ending at Hayward Power Sports. Schrader described the alliance’s coordination with county boards, businesses and private landowners to keep the trail system operating and emphasized maintenance and stakeholder communication.
When a committee member raised concerns about rider speed along the roadside, Schrader said the alliance discourages excessive speed and that law enforcement presence at problem spots this summer had reduced incidents.
The committee took no formal action on the recreational-trails report.
