County committee approves forwarding small land swap needed for Fish Trap Dam repairs

The Sawyer County Land, Water and Forest Resources Committee voted unanimously to forward a proposed land swap needed for Fish Trap Dam repairs to the full County Board.
Committee members were told the project requires additional downstream land so engineers can build a larger rock chute to replace the existing dam structure. Conservation staff said the county would exchange roughly 2,357 square feet (about 0.05 acres) with adjacent owner Steve Perry for a small parcel the county would relinquish on the upstream side.
The swap was described as small and necessary to construct the replacement dam. “We would be doing a land swap … to purchase or to swap 2,357 square feet, which is 0.05 acres,” a conservation staff member said during the discussion. The staff member said most of the land the county would give up is below the ordinary high watermark and is not in current county use.
Conservation staff said the department has worked with the county surveyor to provide a legal description and has discussed deed transfer logistics with the register of deeds office; staff said they do not anticipate needing outside legal review or extra assessment fees for the exchange.
Jim Evans moved to forward the proposal to the County Board; Dale Magnuson seconded. The committee chair called the vote and members present voted “aye.” The motion carried.
The item will return to the County Board for final approval and deed preparation before any transfer occurs.
