Two members of the public addressed the Ravenna Board of Education during the meeting's public‑comment period to describe a dispute stemming from Ravenna Youth Cheer practice and a subsequent trespass notice.
Crystal Williams and her sister Danielle Piatt said Danielle's daughter McKenna, a Ravenna Youth Cheer participant, was told by a co‑director and the high‑school cheer coach that she would be barred from an upcoming competition unless she improved the cleanliness of her routine. The family said the child practiced, showed improvement and was prepared, but coaches later told them the athlete "didn't look right" in placements and would be removed from competition.
Danielle Piatt told the board that, after a heated exchange at practice, she was served trespass papers the next day barring her and the child's uncle from attending school activities involving the child; Piatt denied threatening or cursing at a high‑school student and said she apologized during the interaction. She said she sought meetings with the program director but received no response. The speakers asked the board to consider revoking the trespass and to address communication and process for these youth activities.
The meeting was governed by board policy 169.1, which limits public comment to three minutes per speaker and directs that the board and superintendent will not respond during the meeting; the district said it will provide a written response to recognized commenters.
No board action or rebuttal was offered in open session; the board later entered executive session on employment matters. The speakers said they would pursue district follow‑up outside the meeting.
Why it matters: The comments raise questions about volunteer‑run youth activities that use school facilities and about district processes for handling alleged misconduct and trespass notices. The board did not take action in open session and indicated it will respond in writing.
