The Wixom City Council voted July 22 to award a five-year janitorial services contract for the municipal complex to R and A Facilities Management of Ypsilanti, Michigan. Staff reported the contract’s first-year cost as $100,442 and said the amount is the total for the year as included in the proposal.

City staff described a competitive procurement process. “We walked over 30 people through the facilities ... and we received ... 16 bids for janitorial services,” said Mister Sickma, a city staff member who summarized the process. Staff said they interviewed the top five contenders and called references before recommending R and A, which also proposed a supervisor and optional technology that the city chose not to adopt in year one.

Council members asked about the current contractor’s cost and performance. A council member asked what the city currently pays; staff characterized the current contract amount as close to the new bid but the transcripted figure was unclear. The contract recommendation before council included a clarification that the $100,442 figure is the total first-year cost.

The council approved the recommendation by voice vote. Staff said the contract includes two pricing alternatives in appendix A—one that includes supplies and one that does not—and confirmed the $100,442 is the total first-year figure in the agenda materials.
