Brewer said the office enforces the Uniform Disciplinary Act in cases involving negligence, incompetence and malpractice, and that the medical commission may intervene when there is a risk of harm. "We're enforcing the Uniform Disciplinary Act," she said.
Colleagues described the cases Brewer handles as among the most complex the health section takes. One staff member said the matters often involve "a lot of vicarious trauma, patients that have died, patients that have been abused." Another colleague praised Brewer's attention to technical detail and expert testimony: "She had this need to laser focus in and deep dive, understand the core material, the science, the medicine ... and that allows her to catch nuances in the testimony of opposing experts."
