Malden reports initial Oct. 1 enrollment at 6,192; district sees net decline of about 264 students

Superintendent Timothy Sippel told the School Committee on Oct. 6 that the district's initial Oct. 1 enrollment tally is 6,192 students, about 264 fewer than the same date last year.
Sippel said Forestdale, Salemwood and Malden High School accounted for the most notable declines compared with the prior year. The district is continuing a review, in collaboration with DESE, to verify the numbers and to understand patterns in withdrawals and new enrollments.
District staff reported fewer new students enrolled between July and September 2025 than in the same period in 2024. Sippel said exit interviews and school-level anecdotal data suggest a range of reasons for departures, including housing affordability, job-related moves and completion of academic programs for families who are graduate students. He noted the district keeps demographic flags for attributes such as home language and place of birth but does not collect immigration status; the preliminary data did not show a clear trend tied to those attributes.
Sippel said the district will continue to analyze enrollment trends because enrollment drives state funding formulas and long-term fiscal planning, and he pledged to engage the committee in a collaborative budget process if enrollment declines have budgetary implications.
The committee placed the Oct. 1 enrollment report on file for continued monitoring and asked staff to return with any clarifying analysis.
