The Cerritos City Council on Monday agreed to study the feasibility of adding a 5K run/walk to the 2026 Spring Fling and Fireworks event, voting 4–1 to direct staff to return with detailed plans and costs.
Acting Recreation Superintendent Sameer Patel presented the Parks and Recreation Commission’s unanimous request that the city evaluate a 5K as part of the 2026 Spring Fling. "Staff conducted preliminary research and is estimated that their cost to present a 5 k run walk is $14,000," Patel said, adding the figure excludes any street‑closure expenses or additional insurance the city would need to obtain.
Council debate addressed timing, budgets and potential revenue. Council Member Sei noted other cities run similar events; Council Member Hong said the city’s budget had already been finalized and she preferred considering the event in the next budget cycle unless costs could be offset. Several council members urged staff to seek sponsors, participant fees and community partnerships to reduce city costs. Mayor Pro Tem Johnson suggested using existing park and school routes to avoid street closures.
Council Member Say moved to authorize staff to prepare the detailed report and cost estimate; the motion passed 4–1. Staff said they will return with a report that includes total cost, possible fee structures, insurance/closure needs and a sponsorship plan in time to decide for the Spring Fling (tentatively April 25, 2026).
