Tom Kaufman, public works superintendent, presented a departmental update that covered staffing, recent work and planned equipment purchases.
Kaufman said the department currently staffs mechanics, brick crews, pothole crews, a maintenance team and project teams; he described ongoing pothole patching, parking-lot repairs, intersection work and stormwater tasks. He said seasonal duties include street sweeping, event support (Good Old Days and other city events), and Fish and Game stocking/pond maintenance. Kaufman listed recent projects including Rock Creek dam tree removal, culvert repairs near Happy Hollow and several parking-lot improvements.
Kaufman told the commission purchases scheduled or completed this year include four dump trucks (delivery expected late summer), a rubber-tired roller, a steel-drum roller, a stump grinder and a staff truck. He said staffing needs include additional mechanics and labor for bucket-truck operations.
On a separate agenda item, the commission considered a bid to purchase playground surfacing for Nelson Park. City staff asked to postpone that item to the next meeting because bid documents had not been included in the packet; commissioners voted to table the Nelson Park purchase for review at the next meeting.
Why it matters: The department manages streets, drainage, park infrastructure and event support. The equipment purchases and staffing plan are tied to winter readiness, pothole mitigation and capital work for next year.
