Council hears updates on school crosswalk relocation, hydrant flushing, nuisance abatements and fall events

City staff reported moving a school crosswalk to Harrison Street Southeast for improved visibility, plans to flush hydrants on Nov. 10, a citywide cleanup day, nuisance abatements at two properties and other community maintenance and events.
City staff gave several community-service updates at the Oct. 13, 2025, Cascade City Council meeting, including a relocation of a school crosswalk, hydrant flushing plans, a nuisance abatement and upcoming community events.
Fred, a staff member, said the school crosswalk was moved to where Harrison Street Southeast meets Polk Street to give crossing guards better shade and sightlines. "We moved it down to where Harrison Street Southeast meets it," Fred said, adding crossing guards told staff the new location was clearer for morning sun angles and traffic timing. Staff also said they are coordinating signage changes and may adjust the school-zone speed limit when children are present, subject to the required sign-placement distances.
Fred said the city plans to begin hydrant flushing on Nov. 10. Diana, a staff member, reported the pool was repainted and a donated picnic table for Riverview Park will match existing pavilion seating. Diana said she issued a nuisance abatement at 111 Polk Street; the property owner did not comply and the city had the work completed, with an invoice sent to the owner subject to assessment to property taxes if unpaid. Staff also reminded the public that a citywide cleanup day is scheduled (residents may put out two large items, appliances require a tag).
Council asked staff to return with formal signage placement details and any proposed school-zone speed-limit changes. Staff said they will coordinate with the police and public works on enforcement and placement.
