Hermosa Beach — The Hermosa Beach Planning Commission on Monday voted to continue a city-initiated review of the conditional use permit for Roberts Liquor, 74 Pier Avenue, to a date certain of Oct. 21, 2025.
The continuance followed staff testimony that the request to review the permit came from the city’s police chief after new occurrences at the site. A staff member told commissioners: "This is a request that came from the police chief to review the CUP, regardless of whatever business transaction may be occurring." The commission opened public comment, heard no speakers, and then debated whether to keep the hearing next week or allow the business more time to respond.
Commissioners said they wanted the business to have an opportunity to respond while preserving the commission’s option to act when the record is complete. Chairperson Sarah Hirsch said she would support the continuance: "I am going to support the continuance to October 21." Staff told the commission the owner had been sent a detailed chronology of incidents and that the police department and an Alcoholic Beverage Control investigator would be present on Oct. 21.
Why it matters: The police-initiated review could lead to modification or revocation of permit conditions that allow off-site sale of beer, wine and distilled spirits at Roberts Liquor. Staff said the matter had been communicated to the owner over a year ago and that a recurrence prompted the chief to request formal commission consideration.
What the commission did: After a motion and second, the commission voted yes (McNally, Hoffman, Flaherty, Vice Chairperson Isant, Chairperson Hirsch) and continued the hearing to Oct. 21, 2025.
What happens next: Staff will provide any documentation of the occurrences and the packet for the Oct. 21 hearing; police and an ABC investigator were expected to attend that meeting to present their findings. The commission may at that hearing take no action, modify permit conditions, continue again, or pursue other remedies as provided by municipal code.
