Irmo council approves application for $100,000 MASC “Big Idea” grant for Moore Park playgrounds

Jim (last name not specified), a town staff member who presented the proposal, told council members the application emphasizes “visionary and sensory” upgrades to Moore Park’s playgrounds. “The grant is what the idea that we're can thinking of and kinda put this together is a a simplified large shade, screen that goes over our playgrounds in Moore Park,” Jim said, adding the concept would incorporate lights, sound, misters and projectors that could create a planetarium-like effect under the shade structure.
The council noted the grant is competitive. Mayor Danielson said the program will award a limited number of large grants; the presenters said the town aimed to touch every category the application reviewers might score. Jim said town staff — including Whit and Danielle, who were identified as contributors to the application — worked on the proposal.
Councilmembers approved the resolution by roll call vote. Councilmember Ward, Councilmember Penfield, Councilmember Coleman, Councilmember Waldman and Mayor Danielson each voted yes. The resolution authorizes the town to apply for the grant and to provide the required local match (described in the application as a minimum $5,000).
Council members and staff discussed the potential amenities only in general terms at the meeting; no construction contract or project schedule was presented or approved at the Sept. 25 session. The council recorded no formal amendments or subsequent directions tied to the item during the special meeting.
The action moves the Moore Park playground improvement proposal forward only to the grant-application stage; further council approvals will be required if the town receives the award and before any construction or procurement occurs.
