The sheriff reported the county jail held 128 inmates — 111 males and 17 females — and said book-and-release practices for many misdemeanor and property cases have reduced the population. The sheriff also reported about 16,700 calls for service year to date and roughly 500 calls in the past week, saying the figures reflect changes in booking and release practices.
Public works staff provided multiple road and bridge updates. Staff said the contractor completed paving lanes and top coat work at the Prairie Road Bridge and that the next steps include guardrail installation by D and S Fence and concrete work by the county’s crew on an S-curve along Cherokee Lane; staff estimated remaining cleanup under the bridge could take about a day. A staff member said guardrail and backfill work will speed the bridge opening and that the county is “promising for October 20, October 22” but did not state a definitive opening date.
Public works staff also said routine maintenance continues across county roads: ditching, entrance pipe installation, tree and brush trimming for sight-distance improvements, and final work on a bucket cage for the county bucket truck. Staff noted mechanical downtime for an excavator while awaiting a replacement quick-disconnect coupling and that surplus county equipment has been posted on Purple Wave with a likely final bidding surge before an Oct. 28 deadline.
The commission announced a public meeting at 6 p.m. Oct. 21 in the Commission Room on temporary sidewalk easements and construction for a proposed sidewalk alongside Flat River Road (also referenced as Old Park Hills Road/Flat River Road and connecting to Park Hills). County officials said the sidewalk is intended to move walkers, joggers and bikers off the roadway and provide a safer route to the park. Staff cited traffic near the MAC entrance, estimating about 5,500 vehicles per day at that entrance when MAC is in session, and said the sidewalk aims to improve safety for school and community users.
Commissioners and staff encouraged local residents to attend the Oct. 21 meeting for questions; staff said signs would be posted to notify the public.
