Rockford orchestra program reports 33% growth since 2023; nearly 500 students enrolled districtwide

Orchestra instructors reported strong growth in student participation across Rockford Public Schools, saying nearly 500 students are enrolled in orchestra classes districtwide and high-school ensembles continue to expand.
Jenny Allen and Kyle Pitcher, teachers in the district's orchestra program, presented participation numbers showing 367 students at the middle-school and high-school levels and a combined total of 497 students in the district program. Allen said the high-school and freshman-center orchestras total about 130 students across symphony, philharmonic and concert groups.
"Combined between both of our buildings, starting at the bottom of sixth grade, we have a hundred and 6 sixth graders between the 2 of us this year," Allen said. The teachers said enrollment has risen by about 33% since their 2023 presentation and highlighted recent student honors, All-State recognitions and travel experiences including a New York trip for high-school students.
Program staff outlined upcoming events and recruitment goals: a seventh/eighth-grade concert at the high-school auditorium on Oct. 21, group travel to Chicago for eighth graders, and visits by guest artists. Staff said they're coordinating with REF (Rockford Education Foundation) to sustain an instrument fund that currently supports 28 students and helps families obtain school instruments.
Teachers also described extracurricular opportunities, an after-school alternative-string ensemble, and partnerships with community youth orchestras. They noted that 25% of recent orchestra graduates pursued music majors or minors in college.
Ending: Orchestra staff asked the board to continue supporting instrument funds and scheduling flexibility so students can participate in music alongside required academic coursework.
